Farmers reap benefits from conservation agriculture technologies
By Md Mamun Islam RANGPUR, Oct 29, 2025 (BSS) - Many farmers in northern Bangladesh are reaping the benefit from adopting conservation agriculture (CA) technologies to boost crop production at a low cost, contributing to ensuring food security despite the negative impact of climate change. Along with mechanization in agriculture, the growing adoption of CA technologies is improving the environment, ecosystems, biodiversity, soil health, and fertility, also making farming more profitable for farmers. The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Barind Multipurpose Development Authority, Wheat Research Center and other organizations are popularizing CA technologies among farmers. Dr M A Mazid, a rice scientist and winner of the “Swadhinata Puraskar- 2018” in food security said that the widespread adoption of CA technologies at the farmers’ level will further increase crop production despite the adverse effects of climate change. The adoption of CA technologies will become inevitable in the future to increase food production at a low cost, save water, increase crop intensification and create profitable markets for produced crops, he added. Dr. Mazid, also a former BRRI Chief Scientific Officer, stressed on rapid dissemination of latest CA technologies among farmers and providing more subsidies for easy purchase of necessary machinery, inputs and spare parts to facilitate the process. Chairman of North Bengal Institute of Development Studies Krishibid Dr Syed Samsuzzaman said adoption of CA technologies reduces cost for labours, fuel and irrigation and crop cultivation duration and improves fertilizer management. “Farmers are being benefited using CA technologies like minimum tillage or strip tillage with power-tiller operated seeder machines, direct seeded rice, Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) irrigation method, bed-planting in light texture soil,” he said. Md Mamunur Rashid, a PhD Fellow in the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) at Dinajpur Haji Mohammad Danesh University of Science and Technology, said adoption of CA technologies like AWD irrigation method is expanding in the northern region. Farmers of the northern region are bringing more Boro rice fields under AWD irrigation technology every year, resulting in savings of up to 30 percent of irrigation water and increasing production of 0.50 tonnes of paddy per hectare of land. “The crop rotation CA technology helps farmers sowing seeds in minimum, strip or zero tillage with some crop residue retention on soil surface for better germination with residual moistures to reduce unproductive water loss,” he said. Superintending Engineer for Rangpur Circle of Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) Md Habibur Rahman Khan said that significant progress has been made in the northern region in adopting climate-smart CA farming techniques. "With the adoption of CA technologies and use of conserved surface and rainwater under various projects of BMDA, farmers are producing additional crops to significantly improve their living standards along with reviving the ecosystems," he said. Talking to BSS, Deputy Director of the DAE's Burirhat Horticulture Centre in Rangpur city Krishibid Dr Md Abu Sayem predicted brighter prospects of CA technologies, including raised bed technology. The eco-friendly raised bed technology increases cropping intensity and crop production through reducing the existing time gap between the two crops. “The raised bed technology allows higher yield from 10 to 20 percent saving 30 percent irrigation water and 30 to 40 percent of seeds and fertilisers to maintain sound soil health and easing the agronomical managements in crop fields,” he said. He said the bed planting system adopting the raised bed technology improves water distribution and irrigation efficiency, gives better results in using fertilizers, pesticides and reduces weed infestation and crop lodging and saves crops from disturbance of rats. The experts said adoption of the latest CA agri-technologies have started making farm activities more profitable, increasing crop production to ensure food security, improving soil health, ecology and environment in the northern region.
Teacher turned farmer: From single mango tree to thriving orchard in Bangladesh’s Moulvibazar
Rezaul Karim Khandaker planted his first mango tree in 2017 on a slope beside his home. Eight years on, his orchard now features over 50 varieties of mangoes alone, alongside a diverse range of fruits from around the world.MOULVIBAZAR – In the quiet hills of Moulvibazar’s Barlekha upazila, a one-acre orchard which began as a modest hobby by a teacher has blossomed into a vibrant, chemical-free garden featuring 100 fruit varieties, many of them imported.Rezaul Karim Khandaker, a teacher from the Officebazar area in Dakshin Shahbazpur union, planted his first mango tree in 2017 on a slope beside his home.Eight years on, his orchard now features over 50 varieties of mangoes alone, alongside a diverse range of fruits from around the world.“When I saw the fruits thriving, I kept adding more varieties — both local and foreign,” Rezaul told The Daily Star.A recent visit to the orchard revealed a meticulously organised landscape, where each tree is labelled with its name and origin. Mangoes, oranges, pomegranates, guavas, strawberries, and grapes hang from branches in orderly rows.The garden features 10 varieties of orange and malta, seven types of grapes, and fruits such as apple, pear, persimmon, dragon fruit, jamrul (java apple), lychee, rambutan, salak (snake fruit), rose apple, Turkish mulberry, cashew, Philippine sugarcane, custard apple (atafal), and papaya.Rezaul has also introduced exotic cultivars like African Red Peach, Black Surinam Cherry, and longan varieties including Thai Longan, Red Crystal, and Pingpong Longan — all carefully studied and adapted to thrive in the local climate.Despite a successful mango harvest in previous years, Rezaul was unable to sell his crop this season. Instead, he has turned his attention to grapes, hoping to scale up production for commercial purposes.“I’ve distributed fruits to my relatives and neighbors, but this year I’m hopeful about grapes. It’s my first attempt on a larger scale,” he said.Visitors to the orchard are often astonished. Mahbub Alam, who traveled from Sylhet, said he had heard about Rezaul’s garden from a relative, “But I didn’t think I would be this amazed when I finally visited,” he said.“I felt like I had stepped into a green paradise,” he said. “From Alphonso mangoes and Thai oranges to dragon fruit and Turkish mulberries — many of these I had only seen in documentaries. The garden is not just lush, it’s curated with attention to detail. Rezaul clearly understands what each plant needs.”“As someone who grew up in a village, I’ve seen many orchards, but nothing comes close to this,” he added. Agriculture officials have taken note of Rezaul’s work. Barlekha Upazila Agriculture Officer Krishibid Md Monowar Hossain praised his initiative, calling Rezaul “an exemplary amateur farmer”, encouraging him to pursue commercial expansion.“The orchard could easily become an educational site for students and young farmers,” Mahbub said. “It’s a living classroom in sustainable and diversified horticulture.”Rezaul’s goal is to produce safe, chemical-free fruits for his family and community, while addressing the scarcity of foreign fruits in local markets.
Job Fair for persons with disabilities concludes in Dhaka

Photo: Mehedi Hasan/Dhaka TribuneA day-long Job Fair 2025 for persons with disabilities ended on Thursday at the Bangladesh Krishibid Institution (KIB) Complex in Dhaka.The event was jointly organised by the Bangladesh Business and Disability Network (BBDN) and Brac Bank PLC’s “Aparajeyo Ami” initiative.A total of 620 job seekers with various educational qualifications and skill levels registered for the fair, actively participating in interviews and other activities. Twenty leading organisations took part, including NGOs, ready-made garment (RMG) companies, multinational firms, retail, IT, conglomerates, banking, and service-sector enterprises.Chief guest Bijoy Krishna Debnath, additional secretary of the Ministry of Social Welfare, expressed gratitude to everyone involved in the initiative, describing the effort to integrate persons with disabilities into mainstream society through employment as “truly commendable.” He also announced that in 2026, the National Disability Development Foundation would organise an even larger job fair, inviting at least 200 companies.He added: “On October 15, a special event will be held at the National Disability Development Foundation to mark World White Cane Day. I look forward to everyone’s participation in the event.”Fazlee Shamim Ehsan, board member of BBDN and president of the Bangladesh Employers Federation (BEF), highlighted that disability is not a barrier and emphasised the importance of recognising the abilities, talents, and contributions of persons with disabilities. He further noted that next year, at least 200 individuals with disabilities would secure employment through the job fair.Tareq Refat Ullah Khan, managing director & CEO of Brac Bank PLC, expressed pride in the bank’s participation, noting that over the past three years, it has been hiring qualified persons with disabilities as part of its institutional culture. He said:“Brac Bank provides loans on favourable terms to disabled entrepreneurs so they can advance their own businesses. We also have a visually impaired colleague in our office who, in some areas, performs even better than the rest of us. This demonstrates that, when given the opportunity, disability is never a barrier to progress.”The fair concluded with certificate presentations to graduates of digital skills training, appointment letters for newly recruited employees, sharing of experiences by the recruits, and brief remarks from participating employers. Organisations that took part also received certificates of participation.
